Precubitus

The missing
measurement

Precubitus is developing an objective skin measurement for pressure injury care, using light that sees further than your eyes. We are designing it for every skin tone.

Redness doesn't show on every skin

The same redness, from light to dark skin. Illustration.

A pressure injury often starts as a red patch that doesn't fade when you press on it. On light skin you see it straight away. On dark skin, you barely do. That is why pressure injuries on darker skin are more often found late. Oozageer Gunowa et al., 2018

And the risk scale? It tells you who is vulnerable: who moves little, eats poorly or is often damp. How the skin is doing today, it doesn't tell you.

Skin colour should never be a risk factor

Near-infrared light is far less hindered by the pigment that gives skin its colour. That is why Precubitus is designed to read the same on every skin tone.

Light in,
light back

The sensor shines gentle near-infrared light into the skin. Part of it comes back. Software turns that into an objective measurement and classifies it.

Press a button,
not the skin

You hold the sensor against the skin for a moment, without pressing. A measurement takes a few seconds.

  4. On with care

One example of how it could go. Who measures, and when, is something we will work out together with care teams.

You decide

The measurement doesn't replace your judgement. It gives you something objective to fall back on when you're in doubt.

Look at it together

A measurement is something you can discuss with the wound care nurse or the doctor. A gut feeling is harder to pass on.

What we measure

  • Sub-epidermal moisture
  • Fat
  • Protein

Water, fat and protein each absorb near-infrared light in their own way. That is why Precubitus is designed to measure them in the tissue itself.
